WHAT ARE THE 16 SANSKĀRAS?

The Ṣoḍaśa Saṃskāras, or the 16 Sacred Life Rites, are the most ancient system of human development recorded in the world. These rituals are described primarily in the Gṛhya Sūtras, Dharmashastras, Manusmṛti, Yājñavalkya Smṛti, and supported by verses from the Vedas.

The word Saṃskāra means refinement, purification, cultivation. Just as raw metal is purified through fire, a human being is refined through these 16 transformative rites. The purpose of these Sanskāras is to shape the individual physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually throughout their entire journey — from conception to the final release of the soul.

Regular Shraddha is done yearly for known ancestors. Tripindi Shraddha is done when rituals have been missed for years, or to offer collective peace to three generations.
